Berea College athletic teams opened the 2019-2020 season with some strong performances last weekend.

The men's soccer team picked up two shutout wins, while the women's soccer team defeated Warren Wilson, 3-1.

The men's cross county team took first place in the Berea College/Centre College Jamboree, while the women's team finished third in the event.

The volleyball team also gave new coach Ashley Harris her first win at the school with a 3-2 victory over Hood on Saturday at the River City Tournament.

On Monday, four Berea College athletes were honored by the USA South Conference.

Max Jr., was named the soccer rookie of the week.

Madison Central graduate Bailee Vanover was named the women's soccer player of the week.

Tanner Carson was named the men's cross country runner of the week and Luke Wilson was named the men's cross country rookie of the week.

Vanover, a sophomore midfielder, scored two goals in the only game of the week for the Lady Mountaineers. Vanover opened the scoring in the 16th minute and added an insurance goal in the 66th minute.

Max Jr., a freshman from the Democratic Republic of Congo, scored three goals and both game-winning scores in an undefeated week for the Mountaineers.

In a 4-0 win over Blackburn, Max Jr., scored twice, including the first goal of the season. In a 2-0 victory over Warren Wilson, Max Jr., again scored the first goal of the game, this time on a shot from midfield as time was winding down in the first half.

Carson, a senior from McCreary County, placed first out of 73 runners at the Berea/Centre Cross Country Jamboree. Carson completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 15:29 helping the Mountaineers to a first-place team finish.

Wilson, a freshman from Point Pleasant, W.Va, placed 10th out of 73 runners at the Berea/Centre Cross Country Jamboree. Wilson completed the 5,000-meter course in a time of 16:30.
