Madison Central's Mattie Neeley got off to a fast start Tuesday in the opening round of the Kentucky High School Athletic Association State Golf Tournament in Bowling Green.

She didn't have a great finish, though.

Neeley still finished at even-par (72) and near the top of the leaderboard.

The Central senior is in third place heading into today's final round.

Neeley trails the co-leaders — Lexington Christian Academy's Laney Frye and Boyd County's Olivia Hensley (-3, 69) — both three shots.

Frye and Hensley were the only players to finish under par in the first round.

LCA shot a +25, 313 on Tuesday and leads the team competition by 20 strokes over South Warren.

Central senior Reagan Clark shot a +9, 81, and is tied for 23rd.

Neeley is set to tee off at 9:48 a.m. today on No. 1, while Clark is scheduled to take the course at 9:39 a.m. on No. 10.

Neeley had birdies on No. 2, No. 3 and No. 5 and was -3 before a bogey on No. 6.

She dropped back to three-under again with a birdie on the par-3 No. 11.

The senior had bogeys on three of the final four holes to fall back to even-par.

Neeley had four birdies in the first round. Only Hensley (six) and Frye (five) had more.

Clark had just one birdie (No. 5) and had two double bogeys and five bogeys.
