The Eastern Kentucky University softball team opened the season with a loss to the University of Tulsa.
That was more than a month ago.
And since then, they've lost only one more time.
The Colonels (20-2) pushed their program-record winning streak to 16 games with three victories last weekend in the EKU Invitational at Gertrude Hood Field.
The Colonels beat Akron, 8-0, on Saturday, then picked up a pair of come-from-behind wins on Sunday. EKU beat the University of Illinois-Chicago, 7-5, then closed out the three-day event with a 3-2 victory over Dayton.
EKU's last loss was on Feb. 14 against UNC-Greensboro at the Winthrop Invitational.
On Saturday, Mollie Paulick turned in another outstanding performance in the circle. The senior moved to 10-1 on the season with a one-hit, five-inning shutout of Akron. She allowed just one hit and one walk, while striking out nine.
Ariyana Miranda was 2-for-3 with three RBI and catcher Zoe Mihalicz had two RBI.
The Colonels had to battle to keep the winning streak alive on Sunday.
UIC got the on the board first, scoring four times in the top of the first inning.
EKU cut into that led in the second.
Carly Robinson took the second pitch of the inning deep over the left field fence for her sixth home run of the year. Mattira Morales was hit and Isabella Gonzalez walked to put runners on first and second with one out. Lou Bowers singled to right field to bring home Amanda Sjoberg. Sammi Miller tied the game up with a two-out single up the middle.
Miller got things started in the bottom of the fifth inning with a lead-off bunt single. After a walk put runners on first and second, Mihalicz sent the first pitch into right field to score two runs and give EKU a 6-4 lead.
Mihalicz scored on a wild pitch moments later.
UIC got a run in the top of the seventh on solo home run, but did not get any closer.
Samantha Reynoso (5-1) picked up the win in the circle tossing four innings and striking out five.
Miller went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Mihalicz chipped in 2-for-3 with an RBI.
Dayton got a pair of runs in the top of the third off EKU on Saturday.
Once again, the Colonels battled back.
EKU tied in the score in the bottom of the inning.
Miller lined a double down the left field line. Miranda singled up the middle to score Miller and advanced to second on the throw. Vianna Barron sent a rocket off the wall for a double to score Miranda.
In the bottom of the seventh, Jaqueline Mercado got things started with a lead-off walk. Gabriela De La Cerda moved her to second with a sacrifice bunt, putting the winning run on second base. After an intentional walk to Miller, Miranda took a 1-2 pitch into left center scoring Miranda Lopez to claim a walk-off win.
Tori Peterson (2-0) picked up the win in the circle for EKU, tossing 4 1/3 innings, allowing two hits and striking out one.
EKU is set to return to action Wednesday at Bethune-Cookman.
