The Eastern Kentucky University soccer team was edged by Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay, 2-1, on Friday afternoon in Richmond.

APSU (2-6-3, 1-2-1 OVC) scored twice in the first 15 minutes of play to grab an early advantage.

The Colonels regrouped and tried to dig themselves out of the early hole, outshooting the Govs 17-6 on the day.

In the 22nd minute, EKU (4-8, 2-2 OVC) cut the deficit in half. Redshirt sophomore Sarah Owusu found freshman Audrey Anderson in the middle of the field, just outside the box. Anderson fired a shot past the APSU keeper’s outstretched hands and into the upper left corner of the net, making it 2-1.

It was Anderson’s third goal of the season, and Owusu’s first assist.

EKU stayed on the attack throughout the game, but could never come up with the equalizer.

Anderson and sophomore Baylee Lanter led EKU with three shots each. Owusu, junior Katie Shaffer and freshman Ali Kirk all attempted two shots in the game.

Shaffer, Kirk and junior Claire Hicks played all 90 minutes of the match for EKU.

The Colonels return to action on Sunday when they play host to Murray State.
