A pair of Madison Central graduates have made a big impact during their first season at Eastern Kentucky University.
On Tuesday, Logan Thomason and Jacob Ferris were named to the 2019 Ohio Valley Conference All-Freshman Team.
A total of seven Colonels earned all-league honors including first-team selections Nick Howie (outfielder) and Aaron Ochsebein (pitcher). Rylan Kerr (second baseman), Will Johnson (utility player) and Kaven Brown (pitcher) were All-OVC second-team selections.
Thomason and Ferris helped Madison Central win an 11th Region Tournament title last season.
Thomason jumped right into line-up full-time for EKU (31-25) this year as a true freshman. The third-baseman/shortstop has appeared in 54 of the team's 56 games, including 49 starts.
During the regular season, Thomason hit .288 with 31 runs, five home runs and 35 RBI. He hit two home runs and had five RBI in a game against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Feb. 24
The freshman had three-RBI performances against OVC rivals Eastern Illinois and Tennessee Tech.
On Wednesday, Thomason hit a solo home run in the ninth inning that broke open a tie game and led the Colonels to a 4-1 win over Morehead State in the first round of the OVC Tournament in Marion, Ill.
Ferris, a freshman right-hander, has made 17 appearances on the season, including 11 starts.
He has a 6-4 record with a 5.63 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings. He has the sixth best opposing batting average (.235) in the OVC.
Early in the season, Ferris got to face some big-time opponents in mid-week games.
He started games against Kentucky (4 2/3 innings, allowing four hits, four runs), Louisville, Western Kentucky and Xavier.
The Central graduate jumped into the weekend rotation after Brown went down with an injury. He has pitched at least 5 2/3 innings in each of his past four starts — all against OVC competition — and is expected to start today when the Colonels take on either Austin Peay or UT-Martin.
