It was a record-breaking semester in the classroom for Eastern Kentucky University student-athletes.

Three teams posted their highest grade-point-average (GPA) of all time and one team tied its all-time highest GPA.

All EKU student-athletes combined for a 3.131 grade-point-average, the 15th-straight semester that student-athletes have registered a 3.0 or higher combined GPA.

EKU's combined student-athlete GPA was the second-highest for any semester on record. Fourteen of EKU's 16 varsity teams had a 3.0 or higher GPA.

The women's soccer team (3.758), the women's golf team (3.744) and the women's basketball team (3.40) posted the highest GPAs ever for those respective sports. The soccer team's 3.758 GPA is the second highest-ever by any team for any semester on record. The women's golf team's 3.744 is the fourth highest ever recorded by any team.

The men's cross country team (3.39) tied its previous highest GPA.

Out of 264 student-athletes, 171 earned a 3.0 or better GPA. That is 65 percent with a 3.0 or better GPA. Among that group, 52 Colonels had a perfect 4.0 GPA, the second highest total for a spring semester on record.

"I want to congratulate all of our student-athletes who worked very hard and experienced a high-level of success in the classroom," EKU Director of Athletics Stephen Lochmueller said. "I want to especially shine a light on the outstanding work by our women's soccer, women's golf and women's basketball teams. The student-athletes on those teams took their collective academic performance a step higher than any who came before them."

Three teams posted their second-highest spring GPAs ever - baseball (3.12), men's indoor track (3.14) and men's outdoor track (3.14). The women's indoor track (3.44) and women's outdoor track (3.42) teams turned in their third-best spring GPAs ever.

The other teams compiling a 3.0 or better cumulative GPA included women's cross country (3.37), men's golf (3.17), softball (3.13), volleyball (3.43) and beach volleyball (3.59).

"I want to publicly thank the staff of our Bratzke Student-Athlete Academic Success Center, and all of our coaches for aiding the development of EKU's student-athletes in the classroom as much as they do in competition," said Lochmueller.

EKU's female student-athletes posted a 3.48 combined GPA this spring, the highest-ever recorded by that group. The combined GPA for male student-athletes was 2.92.

In addition to their academic success, the Colonels combined for 3,835 community service hours during the 2018-19 academic year.

That total set a new EKU record.
