This past Saturday, the Madison County Middle School wrestling team competed in the Region 4 Championships at Johnson County Middle School in Paintsville.
The squad competed against teams from Central Kentucky, including Lexington and Frankfort, along with schools from Eastern Kentucky.
Madison County finished second in the team competition. Woodford County took first place, with Johnson County placing third.
The top four wrestlers from each weight division earned a spot in the 16-man state championship bracket.
Madison County was led by champions Thomas Deck (70 pounds) and Jake Franklin (105 pounds).
Deck defeated teammate Jeffrey Kinley in the finals, while Franklin beat the undefeated 27-0 district champion from Frankfort.
Also making the final was Zac Cowan (75 pounds), Gentry Deck (86 pounds) and Daniel Baker (140 pounds).
Baker lost an exciting overtime finals match to the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the state from Johnson County.
Will Keeney (113 pounds) took third place, while Ryan McManus (121 pounds) and Zach Howard (130 pounds) both placed fourth and advanced to the state championships.
Levi Howard also competed in the region tournament.
The state championship will be held at the Montgomery County High School Arena starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
