Senior Jaron Jones poured in a career-high 17 points, but it was not enough as the Eastern Kentucky University men’s basketball team was defeated by Lehigh, 76-51, Sunday afternoon in the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer.
Jaron Jones was named to the Lynchburg (Va.) Subregional All-Tournament team following the game. The Lexington native averaged 14 points-per-game as EKU (3-3) went 2-1 during the three-day event with wins over Liberty and William and Mary.
Senior Joshua Jones tallied 13 points in the loss, while sophomore Jeff Johnson came off the bench to again lead the Colonels in rebounds (seven) and assists (three).
Lehigh (4-2) featured the top returning scorer in the country — junior guard C.J. McCollum. EKU was able to hold McCollum in check, limiting him to just 10 points, but the Mountain Hawks used a balanced scoring attack to subdue the Colonels.
The Colonels return to action Sunday when they to travel back to Virginia to face Norfolk State. Tip is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Lady Colonels get first win of the season
The EKU women’s basketball team trailed by 10 point less than four minutes into the game and trailed by as many as 11 points three times in the first half.
But, the Lady Colonels never folded in a 71-60 victory over Western Michigan University on Sunday in Kalamazoo.
The Lady Colonels (1-2) used two WMU (0-3) scoring droughts to turn the tide on their way to their first victory of the season. Raechele Gray led EKU with 18 points. The junior made 4-of-6 attempts from three-point range and also had four rebounds, four assists and two steals.
Brittany Coles contributed 12 points and Alex Jones added 11 points. Jasmine Stovall registered a team-best six rebounds.
