The Lady Colonels (15-12, 9-7 OVC) open play in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament against Eastern Illinois (12-15, 7-9 OVC) at 1 p.m. today in Nashville.
This will be the first-ever meeting between the programs in the conference tournament.
EIU leads the all-time series with EKU 17-15, including a 75-71 decision Jan. 7 in Charleston Ill.
The Lady Colonels fell to the No. 5 seed in the tournament as a result of losing their final three games of the season.
They finished the season in a three-way tie with Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech for third place in the OVC.
This is the second-consecutive season that EKU enters the tournament as the No. 5 seed. Last season, the Lady Colonels knocked off Murray State, 62-51, on the first day of the tournament.
In the earlier meeting with the Panthers, the Lady Colonels trailed by 11 points with five minutes to play, but their comeback attempt came up short.
The Lady Colonels enter the contest with the league’s best scoring defense, allowing 66.7 points per game. They lead the OVC and rank in the top 40 in the country in three-point field goal percentage defense (28.2). EKU also leads the OVC in rebounding margin at +3.7.
The Lady Panthers enter the game off two consecutive losses. They are led by Second-Team All-OVC selection Sabina Oroszova, who averages 17 points and 10.5 rebounds per game.
The winner of today’s game will face No. 4 seed Tennessee State on Thursday at 1 p.m.
