Madison Southern and Model will face tough competition when the 11th Region Baseball Tournament gets under way today at Western Hills High School in Frankfort.

The Eagles, the 44th District Tournament champs, will take on Franklin County (21-13) at 6:30 p.m., while the Patriots (18-12) will take on Henry Clay (23-10) at 11 a.m. The winners advance to Tuesday’s semifinals (5 and 7:15 p.m.) and the final is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

“There are no easy draws, especially in this region,” Southern coach Ben Fritz said. “I feel pretty good about playing Franklin County. I know they have beaten us twice, but I think that will give our kids a little more ammunition.”

The Flyers defeated Southern (15-11) 10-5 in the season-opener March 28 in Berea, then picked up a 10-0 win May 16 in Frankfort. Henry Clay and Model did not play during the regular season.

Southern earned a spot in the 11th Region Tournament for the first time since 2002 by defeating Model 7-1 Wednesday in the district tournament finals. Model knocked off Madison Central, which had won the last five district titles, 2-1 in the first round, while the Eagles breezed past Berea, 13-0.

The other first-round regional match-ups feature Woodford County (27-9) and Dunbar (18-12) at 1:30 p.m. and Lexington Catholic (28-6) and Scott County (13-21) at 4 p.m.
