Rebecca May scored a game-high 27 points as the Berea College women’s basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 102-81 win Monday over Lindsey Wilson in Columbia.

LaShondra Gray had 17 points and five rebounds, Candy Walls had 16 points and De-An Watkins added 11 points and four assists and two steals for the 18th-ranked Lady Mountaineers.

“It was a big win for our program,” Berea College coach Bunky Harkleroad said. “We had never gone down there and won before. We had a lot of energy. I am really proud of them.”

Berea hit 12 three-pointers, including seven seven-half three pointers, and converted 44 turnovers into 53 points, despite being outrebounded 61-35.

May hit six three-pointers, had a team-high seven rebounds and also had four assists. The Lady Mountaineers led 42-33 at halftime, then continued to pull away in the second half.

Berea jumped out to a quick 9-2 lead when May hit a three-pointer just more than two minutes into the game. Lindsey Wilson battled back to take the lead several times and was up 29-26 with 4:56 left in the first half.

The Lady Mountaineers then scored 11 of the final 13 points of the half to build a nine-point lead. Berea connected on six-of-six free-throw attempts in the final three minutes and also got a three-pointer from May.

The Lady Mountaineers scored 12 of the first 17 points of the second half, including two three-pointers from May, and never let their lead slip to single digits.

Berea returns to action Wednesday at home against Warren Wilson. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at the Seabury Center.
