Madison County will have a strong contingent of swimmers competing in this year’s KHSAA State Swim Meet.
Earlier this week, all of the qualifiers for the championships were announced — and the field includes 16 local student-athletes participating in individual events in addition to nine relay teams.
Madison Central, Model Laboratory and Madison Southern all had qualifiers for the state.
Local athletes are scheduled to compete in 22 of the 24 events.
The state meet is set for Feb. 27 through March 1 in Louisville.
Qualifying times were determined by the results from last week’s regional meets at various sites across the state. The top two finishers in each event gained automatic bids to state. The next 22-fastest times from across all the regions gained at-large bids.
Central had seven swimmers qualify in two individual events.
Sophomore Morgan Lakes won both the 200 IM and 500 free at the regional meet. She is seeded 10th in the 200 IM and 11th in the 500 free.
Junior Chase Baldwin took the regional championship in the 200 IM and will be seeded sixth in the event at state. He also qualified in the 100 fly (11th).
Junior Mitchell Collins won the 100 breaststroke at the regional and will be seeded ninth in the event. He will also be seeded ninth in the 100 butterfly.
Tilly Baldwin qualified in the 200 free (eighth) and the 500 free (15th). Senior Molly Ford is set to compete in the 50 free (ninth) and the 100 free (14th). Trent Lakes will compete in the 200 free (25th) and 500 free (18th) at state and John Babuka is also set to swim two individual events (200 IM — 15th and 100 breast — 13th).
Model had three swimmers qualify in two individual events — Lauren Shepherd (100 fly — 22nd, 100 back — 25th); Jack Miller (50 free — 32nd and 100 free — 22nd) and James Schwartz (500 free — 14th, 100 fly — 21st).
Other individual qualifiers for Central include: Madeline Meeker (200 IM — 27th), Makenzie Burford (100 fly — 32nd), Abby Thompson (100 back — 20th) and Hadley Neal (100 beast — alternate).
Model’s Christopher Jackson qualified in the 200 free (30th).
Madison Southern’s Flanary Patterson won the regional title and is set to compete in the 1 meter diving competition. The sixth-grader had the ninth-best qualifying score.
Central has five relay teams set to make the trip to state. The Lady Indians won the region title in the 200 medley and that squad will be seeded seventh. The 200 free (ninth) and 400 free (13th) also qualified.
The Indians will be highly seed in the 200 medley (sixth) and 400 free (eighth).
The Model boys have the highest seed of any local team/individual at the state meet. Despite finishing third at the region, the Patriots 200 free relay had the fifth-fastest qualifying time.
Model also qualified in the boys 200 medley (28th) and the girls 200 medley (18th) and 400 free (alternate).
