The top-ranked team in the state didn’t have much difficulty rolling to an easy road win Saturday in Richmond.
Marion County (5-0) forced 23 turnovers and got a game-high 18 points from Kyvin Goodin-Rogers during a 64-30 win over Madison Central (2-2). The Lady Knights led by just 10 points at halftime, but they hit four three-pointers in the third quarter and quickly took total control.
“It looked to me like we were intimidated,” Central coach Robbie Cooksey said. “We got ran over. We didn’t play with any poise and we didn’t play with any effort. You can’t play a team like that and not have great effort and great enthusiasm. We didn’t have it.”
Last year, Madison Central suffered a five-point setback to Marion County. The Lady Indians went on to win their first-ever 11th Region title.
This meeting was much different.
Central shot just 26 percent and was two-of-11 from three-point range. Marion County had 21 points off turnovers and 13 second-chance points.
“It was embarrassing,” Cooksey said. “Really, it was.”
Larryn Brooks had a team-high 12 points for Central, Ashton Feldhaus had nine points, Kristin Congleton added seven points and Aleia Minter had two points.
Central is set to return to action at 6 p.m. Friday against Middlesboro at the Lady Pirate Holiday Classic in Berea.
Model 56, Barbourville 52
Model recovered from a disastrous start to pick up a 56-52 victory Saturday night at home against Barbourville.
Model (4-1) committed five turnovers in the opening minutes and the Lady Tigers were hot from three-point range, jumping out to a 16-2 lead.
The Lady Patriots spent the rest of the game fighting back, finally taking the lead in the final minutes.
“The kids showed tremendous heart coming back,” Model coach Ronald Preece said. “Defense is how we got back into the game. We started playing better defense and hitting the boards and getting rebounds and stopped turning the ball over.”
Tara Hill led Model with 21 points and six rebounds.
Caroline Engle had 14 points, Madison Schneid added seven points and 10 rebounds, Darrian Botts had six points and Hayley Hunt and Madison Keene each scored four points.
Model plays Wednesday at Burgin.
Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
