Twenty-one four person teams teed it up at The Bull last Saturday in the Ty Lucas Foundation Golf Scramble. After a competitive day of golf on a beautiful golf course the team picking up the thousand dollar first place prize was Jack Taylor, Justin Price, Justin Moore and Chuck Hardin. They shot a 17 under par 55 to notch the win. Two teams tied for second place with scores of 58 and in the matching of scorecards the team of Evan King, Justin Snowden, Shawn Ballard and Jared Kiser took the honors. The third place team was Matt Bowling, Adam Eades, Ken Short and Nick Stephens.
In the special events, the winner of the longest drive was Drew Alexander and Bo King won the closest to the pin contest. No new car was won from Jack Burford Chevrolet for a hole-in-one.
After play the players enjoyed a buffet luncheon on the verandah and the teams and special events winners were presented their awards.
This tournament plus an auction and dinner raised $14,000.00 for the Ty Lucas Foundation. This Foundation was established in April 2010 in honor of the life of Ty Franklin Lucas who passed away due to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome at the age of seven months. All of these proceeds will be used in Madison County to help with the needs of children and pediatrics while also raising awareness of SIDS.
My hats off to Angie Lucas for starting such a worthwhile Foundation and thanks for seeing that I got the results. Mahalo!
Marines take over
Battlefield Golf Course
Last Saturday the Marine Corp League, Bluegrass Detachment 1012 took over the Battlefield Golf Course for four hours in their annual fund raiser for programs that help Madison County.
Thirty-nine players took part in this skirmish to decide who would raise the flag of victory. Hoisting that flag was the team of Rocky Anglin, Josh Anglin, Micah Rose and Malichi Smith with a 19 under par 53. Second Place honors went to Jack Hissom, Tim Stephens, Bob Herbst and Devon Gabbard with a 55. Third Place was Tommy Gilbert, Juri Rasmus, Phil Williams and Gary Tyree with 58.
In the special events it was a one man show. Devon Gabbard won both the closest to the pin prize and the longest drive. His team also came in Second overall. You da man, Devon!
After play the players were treated to a luncheon on the patio, prizes were awarded and Adjutant Mike Leaverton expressed his appreciation to the players and Head Pro Clay Hamrick and his staff for their support and help. Special thanks to Pro Clay Hamrick for the info.
Carter Skipworth tees it
up with Johnny Bench
Last Monday, June 18, Madison Central golf team member Carter Skipworth had one of the big thrills in his young life when he got to play nine holes of golf with legendary Johnny Bench, an all-time great player for the Cincinnati Reds baseball team. He was playing in the Annual Larry Gilbert Celebrity Golf Tournament in Lexington that was sponsored by local PGA Tour player Josh Teater.
Carter is an up and coming freshman on the Central golf team and Coach Tim Stephens predicts he will be a tremendous help to the team in the next four years.
Special thanks to proud grandmother, Darnetta Congleton, for alerting me to this exciting event.
You da lady! Good luck in the future, Carter.

Golfers wisdom on putting
Chi Chi Rodriguez said, “I don’t fear death, but I sure don’t like those three footers for par.” Henry Cotton said, “The big trick in putting is not method – the secret of putting is domination of the nerves.” Amen.
