Madison Southern and Western Hills opened the volleyball season with a match-up on Aug. 20 in Berea.

They are set to meet again - on the same court.

And this time, one team's season will come to an end.

The Lady Eagles (27-4) will take on the Lady Wolverines (24-12) at 6:30 p.m. today at Madison Southern High School in the opening round of the 11th Region Tournament.

The winner moves on to face either Henry Clay (22-15) or Tates Creek (25-8).

Madison Central (7-27) is set to meet Dunbar (27-9) at 6 p.m. today in Lexington.

The winner moves on to face either Great Crossing (21-12) or Frederick Douglass (26-11).

The semifinals and finals will be played at Tates Creek on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Madison Southern has put together one the most successful seasons in program history. The Lady won their first district title since 2006 and are one win short of tying the school record.

They can make even more history today.

Southern has never won a match at the 11th Region Tournament. The Lady Eagles have lost in the first round in seven-straight seasons, winning just one set.

Southern, however, has already beaten the team it will face in the opening-round this season.

The Lady Eagles earned a 3-0 win over Western Hills (25-23, 25-14 and 25-13) two months ago. Senior Sarah Mitchell had 14 kills in the victory, making her the first player in program history with 1,000 kills. Alyssa Evans had eight kills and eight digs, Autumn Griffith had 13 digs and three aces, while Kyla Atkins had 13 aces, nine digs and three kills.

Southern has won 18 of its past 19 matches and has only lost once at home all season. All four of the Lady Eagles' losses this season came to 11th Region rivals - Bryan Station, Great Crossing, Frederick Douglass and Lexington Catholic.

Western Hills has won eight of its past 11 matches. The Lady Wolverines fell to Great Crossing, 3-0, last week in the 41st District Tournament title game.

Western Hills will also be looking to make history. The Lady Wolverines have not won a regional tournament match in 18 years.

Madison Central has advanced to the 11th Region semifinals in two of the past three years (2016 and 2018).

The Lady Indians, however, have lost seven of their past eight games. They clinched a ninth-straight trip to the 11th Region Tournament with a 3-1 win over Berea last week in the 44th District Tournament.

Dunbar defeated Lexington Catholic and Tates Creek last week to win the 43rd District championship.

The Lady Indians have never faced Dunbar in the 11th Region Tournament.
