The Pirates had five players foul out, but were still able to grind out a victory Monday in their season opener.
Trenton Wilson poured in 19 points and Jaylen Dorsey had 15 points and 12 rebounds -- before picking up a fifth personal -- as Berea Community defeated Barbourville, 73-60 at home.
The Pirates hit 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to secure the win.
Edward Sexton had nine points, Jayden Smith had eight points and seven rebounds and Isaiah Dorsey had seven points.
Berea led 16-9 after the first half and went into halftime up 39-24.
James Brennan and Rey Alejandro each had six points, while Quentin Morgan added three points.
Dorsey, Smith, Morgan, Brennan and Alejandro all fouled out.
Sexton and Wilson each had four fouls.
Berea is set to return to action Friday at home against Bluegrass United.
Lady Pirates fall
The Berea Community girls basketball team couldn't overcome a poor shooting performance to earn a win in their season opener.
The Lady Pirates were 5-of-25 from three-point range in a 81-69 loss at home Monday to Spencer County.
Madison Howell had 20 points and seven rebounds for Berea. Mati Stepp had 14 points and a team-best three assists.
The Lady Pirates had a 16-12 lead after the first quarter, but trailed 34-31 at halftime and 57-45 after three quarters.
Berea shot just 32 percent from the field overall (21-of-65) and was 22-of-31 at the free throw line. The Lady Pirates also had 21 turnovers.
Abigail Beard had eight points. Isis Rogers had seven points. Maddy King had seven points. Mackenzie Howell had four points. Emily Maynard, Sophie Brewer and Alexis Newman had three points each, while Chesney Lovins had one point.
Berea is set to return to action Wednesday at district rival Madison Central.
