BEREA -- The Lady Pirates got off to a rough start in Friday's match-up with Oldham County at the Berea Holiday Classic.
They didn't score a point for almost six minutes.
Berea Community (5-4) did bounce back, but wasn't able to pick up a victory.
The Lady Colonels hit five of six free throws in the final minutes and hung on for a 48-40 win. Alexis Newman had a team-best 16 points for Berea, including four three-pointers.
The Lady Pirates slip into the consolation bracket of the tournament and will take on Barren County at noon today.
Oldham County jumped out to an 8-0 lead. Berea finally got on the board when Newman hit a three-pointer with 2:20 left in the first quarter.
The Lady Colonels were up 11-3 after the opening period, but Berea battled back to tie the game at halftime, 16-16.
The Lady Pirates took a 22-20 lead early in the third quarter.
Oldham County had a 32-29 lead heading into the fourth. Berea once again pulled even, 34-34, before the Lady Colonels surged ahead with a 9-3 run.
Berea was 12-of-20 from the free throw line and hit 4-of-11 three-point attempts.
Madison Howell and Abigial Beard each had eight points. Maddy King, Chesney Lovins, Lauren Stepp and Mackenzie Howell each had two points.
Berea has lost two of its past three games.
