Every time they step onto the field, the Pirates do something they haven’t done in a long time.
A victory last week over Harlan gave Berea Community its first three-game winning streak in a decade.
A win this week would mark the first time since 2008 that Berea has won four-straight games.
The Pirates are set to take on Caverna (1-1) at 2 p.m. today at Duerson Stadium in their home opener.
It’s been a remarkable turnaround — in a very short period of time — for Berea.
The Pirates lost 43-consecutive games over a four-year span before beating Jellico, Tenn., on the road in last year’s season finale.
Berea followed up that long-awaited victory with a 53-18 win at Jackson County, then beat Harlan, 21-7.
Against the Green Dragons, the Pirates had a pair of 100-yard rushers and finished with almost 300 yards of total offense.
Quarterback Jaylen Whitaker completed 12-of-19 passes for 79 yards (two interceptions) and also rushed for 106 yards on 14 carries with a touchdown.
Sophomore Jaiden Cunningham had 100 yards on 16 carries and scored twice.
Timmy Thompson had nine catches for 77 yards.
On the season, Whitaker is 21-of-32 for 253 yards with four touchdown passes and two interceptions.
Cunningham has a team-best 255 yards rushing with four scores.
Cody Moore has a team-high 97 yards receiving on 10 catches.
Caverna opened the season with a 44-12 loss to Hart County, but bounced back with a 51-0 win last week over Shawnee.
Quarterback Drew Rhodes has accounted for seven touchdowns on the season (three passing, three rushing and one on an interception return).
Running back Mark Webb has four touchdowns (two rushing, two receiving) and Zyier Yates has a TD catch.
Caverna and Berea have not met in nine years.
The Colonels beat the Pirates 30-20 in 2010. Berea beat Caverna, 30-16, in 2009.
