Four Eastern Kentucky University football players -- Alonzo Booth, Graham Ashkettle, Samuel Hayworth and Steven Crowder -- have been named to the 2019 Academic All-District® Team, as selected by the College Sports Inform-ation Direc-tors of America.
As first-team all-district honorees, they advance to the Academic All-America® ballot. EKU was the only school in the Ohio Valley Conf-erence to have multiple players selected to an Academic All-District® Team.
Booth, a 6-foot-1, 250-pound redshirt sophomore running back, carries a 3.89 grade-point-average while majoring in psychology.
He finished the season with 673 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns. The Columbus, Ohio native, and Second-Team All-OVC selection, leads the conference and is 16th in the nation in rushing touchdowns.
Ashkettle, a 6-foot-4, 300-pound redshirt sophomore offensive lineman, has a perfect 4.0 GPA while majoring in chemistry. The Crestwood native, and Second-Team All-OVC pick, started 10 times at right tackle for an offensive line that helped EKU rush for 2,468 yards. The Colonels led the OVC and ranked 22nd in FCS football with 205.5 rushing yards per game.
Hayworth, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound redshirt senior kicker, carries a 3.96 GPA while pursuing a master's degree in public health. He made 18-of-22 field goals and all 37 point-after attempts on his way to earning first team all-conference honors. He ranked ninth in the nation with 1.50 field goals per game and 14th in the country in field goal percentage (81.8 percent). The Ormond Beach, Fla., native was chosen as the OVC Specialist of the Week twice this season.
Crowder, a 6-foot-2, 225-pound junior linebacker, carries a 3.53 GPA while pursuing a degree in applied engineering management. He was second on the team with 63 tackles this season to go along with 9.5 tackles for a loss, two sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. The Mount Olive, Ala., native ranked 14th in the OVC in tackles for a loss and 30th in total tackles.
To be nominated for Academic All-America honors, a student-athlete must carry at least a 3.3 cumulative grade-point-average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. No athlete is eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution.
