The postseason accolades continue to roll in for members of the EKU football teams.
Sophomore defensive back Davion Ross received two national honors last week.
He was named a Second-Team Football Championship Subdivision All-American by the AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) and was also a Third-Team All-American selection by Stats Perform.
A native of Perry, Ga., Ross was voted as the ASUN Defensive Player of the Year and was selected as a Sophomore All-American by HERO Sports.
Ross led the nation with three interception returns for touchdowns and tied for sixth nationally with 13 pass breakups.
He totaled 46 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and a fumble recovery on the season and was part of an EKU defense that picked off 13 passes this fall. He also recorded 19 kick returns for a total of 522 yards, ranking 13th in the nation with a 27.5 yard average, including a 98-yard touchdown return against No. 1 Sam Houston. Ross is the second Colonel in three years to earn AFCA All-American honors, joining former defensive lineman and current Denver Bronco Aaron Patrick.
The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. EKU owns the AFCA record for consecutive years with an All-American selection, placing at least one player on the All-American team in its first 15 years an FCS program (1979-93).
Walder selected for Tropical Bowl
EKU's Roland Walder has been selected to compete in the SPIRAL Tropical Bowl on Jan. 15 in Orlando, Fla.
The Tropical Bowl showcases the top college football seniors to NFL scouts and GM's who travel from around the country to the event. The weekend is focused on scouting, teaching, and football. Since its inception in 2016, more than 350 Tropical Bowl alumni have gone on to the NFL.
Walder started all 11 games on the defensive line for the Colonels. He finished the season tied for the team lead with 4.0 sacks and ranked second on the defense with 7.0 tackles for loss. His five pass deflections were the most of any defensive lineman in the ASUN this season. Ealier this month, Walder played in the FCS National Bowl in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Dayton, Ohio, native will be the second Colonel to play in the Tropical Bowl in two years. Wide receiver Keyion Dixon competed in the 2021 event.
