The season has come once more for Richmond law enforcement to conduct a crackdown on local roadways with their police checkpoints. This time of year always puts a warm feeling in my belly. Or is that the whiskey? It's almost like butterflies in my stomach, knowing that these criminals who would otherwise go undetected are meeting the justice they so rightfully deserve.

Constitutional nuts may whinge and complain as they do, droning on about some sort of civil rights violations they believe are occurring. "Oh no! But what about the 4th Amendment? Blah blah blah." These types are very sensitive and easy to provoke into a hysterical and paranoia filled rage. Have they forgotten the fundamental function of the police department? To protect and serve; and that my friends is exactly the idea.

So what if the majority of crimes cited turn out to be cases of expired tags, licenses and registration, or lack of insurance, rather than DUIs? Regardless of the severity, these people are CRIMINALS plain and simple! This of course has nothing to do with bringing revenue to the department, as some will inevitably attempt to claim. As any sensible person is already aware, only the most benevolent of individuals are awarded the humble position of a Law Enforcement Officer.

So the next time you find yourself in a police checkpoint, ignore that pit in your gut telling you that you're somehow being infringed upon. Comply with their demands, move along, and rest easy knowing that now you are safe. I say if anything they haven't gone far enough! Why stop at roads when we have so many lawless walkways, parks, and establishments ridden with criminals who sneak right under our noses?
