BEREA — The rain poured down, very hard at times, for most of the day.

The clouds, though, parted for a brief moment in the afternoon.

Perfect timing for a special event.

"It was so great," said Melisa Stacy, director of Sunshine Friends Pre-School. "I thought we were going to have to cancel. It was looking like it, but it turned out great."

The sun came out long enough for the school to honor its first-ever kindergarten graduation ceremony. The six children showed up in blue robes and caps and were greeted by family and friends for a social-distancing safe drive-thru ceremony.

On Thursday, the school will hold a similar ceremony for its 40 pre-k students.

Sunshine Friends is part of the ministry of Berea United Methodist Church. The school has offered pre-k for children ages 3 and older since 1984, but this class was extra-special.

"We just started the kindergarten class," Stacy said.

Sunshine Friends hopes to add more kindergarten students in the future and is accepting applications for the 2020-2021 school year.
