"It's not just a cake" is the motto of Sweet Blessings, a nonprofit organization which bakes specialty cakes for "children living in crisis" including, impoverished kids and children with a life threatening disease or special needs. On Tuesday, during a 24-hour period with a goal to make as many specialty cakes as possible, Ashley Gann and a team of more than 100 volunteers to celebrate the non-profits' eighth anniversary.
Referrals for cakes are sent into Sweet Blessings through schools, social service providers and churches and then the volunteers make cakes with multiple tiers or a three dimensional aspect. Gann said the customization of the cakes is determined by certain hobbies, interests or aspirations the specific child has. Cakes being made on Tuesday included ones decorated with a giant Xbox controller on top, Little Mermaid, Paw Patrol and other children's favorites.
