Berea police arrested a man on several charges after officers responded to a shoplifting complaint on Jill Drive Sunday.
Officers were told Dustin Hines, 25, Mount Vernon, was hiding in the trunk of a vehicle in the parking lot, and when they arrived, a bystander pointed out the vehicle, according to an arrest citation.
Police tried to pull the trunk open, but Hines tried to hold it down. One officer grabbed ahold of Hines's foot, and he kicked the officer to break free.
Hines then crawled forward in the vehicle, and all the doors were locked, the citation states. He was told to stop and open a door to the vehicle.
Hines instead started the vehicle, and in response, an officer used a baton to break the window at the driver's seat to gain control of Hines.
Hines drove away, and officers had to jump away from the car in order to avoid being hit, the citation states. He drove at a high rate of speed through the Walmart parking lot, through the McDonald's parking lot and through the intersection of Brenwood and McKinney while disregarding all stop signs.
He continued to flee until he abandoned the vehicle at Prince Royal Shell Mart, where a bystander told officers he ran into the woods behind America's Best Value Inn.
Police spotted him in the wood line behind Pizza Hut, and he fled again, the citation states.
One officer deployed their Taser, which had no effect.
Officers eventually caught up to Hines, and he resisted arrest. Once he was in custody, officers called EMS to examine him before he was taken to the Madison County Detention Center, where he remained Tuesday afternoon, according to online jail records.
Loss prevention at Walmart reported Hines took about $10.57 worth of merchandise.
He is charged with theft by unlawful taking (less than $500), two counts of resisting arrest, first-degree fleeing or evading police (motor vehicle), second-degree fleeing or evading police (on foot), three counts of third-degree assault (police or probation officer), two counts of first-degree wanton endangerment (police officer) and first-degree wanton endangerment.
