Dr. Shelly Boulden, principal of Mayfield Elementary, will also be principal at Mayfield in the fall when the building becomes an all-kindergarten academy.
Madison County Schools Superintendent Elmer Thomas announced her appointment Friday.
The Madison County School Board last year voted a tax increase to fund full-day kindergarten. It later accepted Thomas’ proposal to house all kindergartens for Richmond-area schools in a kindergarten-only academy in the Mayfield building.
Although many Mayfield families wanted it to remain an elementary school, the board adopted Thomas’ plan as the least costly option.
An educator for 18 years, Boulden earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Kentucky and a doctorate in educational leadership and policy studies from Eastern Kentucky University, according to Thomas’ announcement.
She became a national board certified teacher in 2001 as an early childhood generalist and was presented UK’s “Teacher Who Made a Difference” award in 2007.
Before coming to Mayfield this past fall, she served as professional staff assistant at Lexington’s Squires Elementary School for four years. Prior to that, she was a kindergarten-through-fifth grade literacy coach, a first-grade reading coach and an elementary teacher.
