Telford YMCA will offer screenings and nutritional information Wednesday during its annual Senior Health and Fitness Fair.

The event — from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. — will coincide with the 13th annual National Senior Health and Fitness Day.

The Madison County Health Department, Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center, local chiropractors, pharmacies and home health care providers are just a few of the more than 40 vendors that will be featured at the fair.

“We want to demonstrate that exercise can be fun,” said Susan Patton, Telford YMCA program director. “Our seniors look forward to this chance to experience some appropriate and enjoyable forms of exercise. It’s also a great opportunity for them to find out about health-related resources in our community.”

Information will be available about health and nutrition specifically for seniors and screenings will be conducted for blood pressure, bone density, body mass analysis and hand-eye coordination.

Everything from T-shirts and gift certificates to YMCA memberships will be given away as door prizes as well.

“Every year, there are increases in the numbers that participate,” said Fred Crump, a volunteer and retired YMCA program director. “I think the first year we had about 120. Last year, we had about 150. So, we’re expecting a good crowd. If the weather’s good, people like to get out and do stuff like this because they’ll win some prizes and everything.”

“It helps seniors be a little bit more aware not only of the shape they’re in, but some of the things they need to be doing,” he said.

Crump also will be giving demonstrations of a Body Recall fitness class.

“It’s a great physical program where you don’t have to sweat and get into gym clothes,” he said.

“(Body Recall) increases your flexibility,” Crump said. “It gives you a little bit more awareness of strength management and what you need to be doing at your age. It also helps you with balance.”
