Nearly 100 bicycles stood next to tables stacked high with toys Friday at Eastside Community Church.
Volunteers buzzed through them, sorting boxes filled with even more toys not yet on display.
Today, hundreds of families in need of Christmas gifts for their children will be given bags of those toys collected by the Ty Lucas Foundation.
This is the first year the foundation has collected toy donations on its own, without other partnerships. Founder Angie Lucas said she could not be more excited to see all of the donations in one place, nearly ready to be given away. The year, she said, is turning out to be a great success.
“It’s such a blessing to see it all coming together,” Lucas said. “The foundation has gone beyond what we could have ever imagined.”
Four years ago, the foundation was created after the death of 10-month-old Ty Lucas, just 10 days before Christmas.
“After that, we knew we wanted to help children have a merrier Christmas,” Lucas said.
This year, the organization has named its giveaway the Good “Ty” dings toy drive. More than 125 volunteers have helped organize gifts that fill Eastside Community’s large worship center. A meal will also be served to all families in attendance today.
