A Richmond man pleaded guilty Monday in Madison Circuit Court to sexual abuse and robbery charges for sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman at gunpoint last December in Richmond.

William Morris, 19, pleaded guilty to one count each of first-degree sexual abuse and second-degree robbery. Morris had been initially charged with first-degree sodomy and first-degree robbery, but charges were amended as part of a plea bargain, said Jennifer Hall, assistant commonwealth’s attorney.

The prosecution’s recommendation is that Morris receive five years on the sexual abuse charge and 10 years on the robbery charge, to be served concurrently for a total of 10 years in prison.

Morris was scheduled for a jury trial Monday, but decided to plea instead. His sentencing is scheduled for June 1 at 11 a.m.

The female assaulted by Morris called the Richmond Police Department at 7:46 p.m. Dec. 12 to report that a white male approached her as she was walking to her Richmond East apartment, pulled a gun on her and told her to comply with him or she would be shot, said Sgt. Willard Reardon, public affairs officer for the Richmond Police Department.

The suspect allegedly forced the victim into an area near the rear of the apartment complex where the alleged sexual assault took place. Morris also reportedly took money from the victim.

Morris fled on foot when approached by officers in the area, but the Richmond Police Department’s K-9 Unit tracked Morris into a wooded, bushy area, where he was captured and taken to the Madison County Detention Center.

Police were not able to find the gun allegedly used in the crime. A gun was found in February that police thought could be connected to Morris, but a report from the Kentucky State Police laboratory which analyzed the gun stated that there were no visible fingerprints and therefore no identification could be made, Reardon said. The owner of the gun also is unknown.

Morris’ attorney, Joe Blanford, was not available for comment.
