Law enforcement officers swarmed through Meijer on Saturday, but they weren’t looking for shoplifters. Local children were at their sides for the annual Shop with a Cop event.
The Madison County Fraternal Order of Police sponsored the event with help from other community members. They also took children Saturday morning at Wal-Mart.
Approximately 40 police officers from departments within the county assisted about 180 children who may not have received much for Christmas through the stores to shop for clothes and toys.
“We want them to get some toys, but we also want them to get the things they need,” said Richmond Police Chief Larry Brock.
“Most of them go right to the clothes first,” Brock said. “I think they love the special attention they get from the officers.”
