A 49-year-old Madison County man drowned Tuesday after being trapped under a lawnmower in a pond on his property.

Markel Tippett, 388 Charlie Norris Road, allegedly was mowing on a steep grade next to a pond when the zero-turn radius mower overturned into the water, according to an on-scene investigation by the Kentucky State Police.

“We’re not really sure how long he was under,” said Madison County Assistant Coroner Carlos Coyle. “His wife no longer heard the lawnmower and went out to check on him.”

Tippett was removed from underneath the mower by some neighbors and off-duty firefighters, Coyle said.

He then was taken by the Madison County EMS to Pattie A. Clay Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

“EMS responded to the scene and attempted resuscitation,” Coyle said. “That was continued at the hospital, but it was unsuccessful.”

Coyle said he did not know how steep the incline was or how deep the pond was, but he said the men who retrieved Tippet from the water were able to stand.

There will be no autopsy and foul play is not suspected.

The investigation is being handled by Kentucky State Police Trooper Scott Felder.
