Art Students from 17 public and private schools, as well as home-schooled students, entered artworks in the 2006 Madison County Arts Expo.

Sponsored by the Richmond Area Arts Council and People’s Bank of Madison County, the Art Expo opened Monday evening at First Christian Church in Richmond.

Each school was allowed 15 entries. This year’s expo saw four additional schools participate, said Michelle Dicken, RAAC arts education coordinator.

Judged by Professor Kevin Sparks of St. Catharine’s College, prize ribbons were presented to the top three exhibitors from each school. Each school‚s first-place winner went home with a basket of art supplies.

The Best Display award went to Waco Elementary and art teacher Susan Hawley. Quintel Force of Mayfield won Best Overall in the Elementary School division, while Clare Koury of the Richard Deane Arts School won Best Overall for middle school and Leah Rees of Berea Community won Best Overall for high school.

Performing arts were part of this year’s expo, too. Home-schooled sisters Anna and Sarah Harmon performed on their violins and Daniel Boone Elementary music students played patriotic tunes on marimbas. Mayfield and then Waco Elementary put on dance performances.

The Expo is open today through 4 p.m.
