Miranda Shearer, Madison County Extension Agent for 4-H/Youth Development

On June 30 more than 200 Madison County kids will load a bus headed for four days and three nights of fun at 4-H Summer Camp.

Campers will have a chance to hike, swim, dance and spend time learning about the environment, their friends and themselves.

And we need your help to make it possible!

This wonderful experience is only possible when there are enough camp volunteers. Nearly 50 teen and adult camp volunteers are needed for Madison County 4-H Camp, June 30-July 3.

Approved Teen Volunteers attend camp at no cost, and camp is a great way to earn community service hours, gain work experience and build relationships with other 4-H Camp volunteers and campers.

All approved Adult Volunteers are eligible to receive a camp scholarship to give to the camper of their choice. Parents attending camp can go for free and one of their kids can also go for free!

A 4-H camp volunteer is like a parent who gives encouragement, direction, provides discipline, gives counsel and loves spending time with children. Camp volunteers are also the friends who offer companionship, friendship, an ear to listen and support when things look down.

Although good camp volunteer leaders are different in many ways, they have one thing in common: They enjoy giving time to 4-H and are rewarded with a sense of accomplishment when their cabin is having fun at camp.

Camp volunteers stay in cabins and teach classes. They organize games and activities. They’re tireless dancers and cookie consumers, experts at removing knots from shoelaces, awesome coaches and have no limit of funny expressions, and love to Sally Down the Ally!

Camp volunteers are willing to rise early in the morning and go to bed late at night. And for four days, are the heroes in the eyes of so many campers.

If you are interested in volunteering for summer camp, please contact the Madison County Cooperative Extension Service at 623-4072. An application will be mailed to you.

Educational programs of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service serve all people regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability or national origin.
