If you are in the market to purchase feeder steers or heifers, make plans to attend our annual CPH-45 sale on Tuesday, Dec. 4, at 6 p.m. at the Bluegrass Stockyards of Richmond.
We have approximately 1,050 feeder calves pre-consigned to the sale. The majority of these calves will be home raised, those that are not have been owned by the consignor for at least 60 days.
All calves are weaned at least 45 days, eating from a bunk and drinking from a fountain or tank, have had at least one blackleg shot, two vaccinations for respiratory diseases and one for shipping fever. Heifers are guaranteed to be open and no stags are allowed.
These calves have been screened on the farm and at the yards prior to sale. They have been dewormed and tagged with an official CPH-45 tag. Give me a call at 623-4072 for more information.
Free soil-testing program
Soil testing is a very important part of most any agriculture and/or horticultural operation. It allows the producer to apply soil amendments that are needed (fertilizer, lime, micronutrients, etc.) in amounts needed for maximum crop production potential.
Free soil testing is available all year at the Madison County Extension Office. The normal $6 per sample charge will be waived. Agricultural and horticultural samples from Madison County residents will both be accepted. There is a 10 sample per person per year limit.
Fall is a great time to soil sample! Turnaround time at the UK soil testing lab is quicker because of the lower demand this time of year. Also, fertilizer prices are typically less in the fall. If needed, a fall application of phosphorus, potassiu, or lime will allow any low-testing soils to equilibrate prior to spring planting. This is especially important if an application of lime is needed.
Assessing soil fertility needs in the fall also gives you time to plan, calculate price inputs and prepare for spring planting.
