The Halloween Hoedown has been cancelled due to predicted weather conditions.

In an email sent out by the Richmond Parks and Recreation Department on Wednesday afternoon, the event is no longer taking place.

The event was scheduled to take place on Thursday evening at Lake Reba in-person. It was restructured as a drive-thru event in 2020 due to COVID-19.

Trick-or-treat is still scheduled to take place on Sunday, Oct. 31 in the cities of Richmond and Berea from 6 to 8 p.m. The city of Berea is still scheduled to host their annual Halloween in the Park event at the same time.

In lieu of the Hoedown, the parks department has been helping to spread the word about HoopFest, which is set to take place on Friday, October 29th at Alumni Coliseum.

"We have been looking forward to having the Halloween Hoe-Down at the walking trail in Lake Reba this year especially since it was going to be different from our usual downtown event," said Lauren Kilburn, assistant program coordinator.  "We are very disappointed to have to cancel, but didn't want our vendors or trick-or-treaters to get out in the cold, rainy weather. We will be donating our candy to EKU's Hoopfest event on Friday, October 29th."

Trick-or-treating on the concourse level and in the Fred Darling Auxiliary Gym will open the night's event with doors opening at 6 p.m. Within this space, there will be plenty of games, candy, photo opportunities, inflatables and food.
All children are encouraged to wear costumes, as they will have opportunities to get highlighted on the video board during the event. Free popcorn is available to all kids provided by Aramark. Concessions will be available for the entirety of the event.
The official Hoopfest basketball program will begin at 7 p.m. Head coaches A.W. Hamilton and Greg Todd will then introduce their teams, followed by team scrimmages. The EKU cheer and dance teams will also perform during the event.
