Model Laboratory School, located in EKU's Donovan building, has existed since 1906, and is the last remaining model school in the commonwealth.

In the event Governor Beshear's proposed education budget passes, $90 million would be allotted to EKU to build a new Model Laboratory School facility.

Beshear's proposed $2 billion education budget would be the largest in the state's history, and among other things, fund universal preschool programs. However, Beshear's budget would have to gain approval from the state's general assembly before passing, who have their own proposed budget.

Model Superintendent John Williamson released a statement on Tuesday announcing the potential replacement facility. He showed great support for Beshear's proposal, but noted the final budget would have to have the support of the General Assembly as well.

"As promising as this news is, the final budget is determined by the general assembly," Williamson said. "We know, too, that both the Senate and and the House of Representatives value the importance of pre-K-12 and higher education across the commonwealth, and both chambers continue to support Model Lab, as evidenced in the passage of HB 366 in the last legislative session. We remain hopeful that the Model replacement project will become part of the final budget recommendations."

Williamson also praised the governor's budget for its investment in higher education.

"I am equally thankful that the governor's proposed budget focuses heavily on investing in pre-K-12 and higher education, innovation, and transformation. Now more than ever, we must come together to focus on these values to attract the best and brightest to the next generation of teachers to the education profession. As the commonwealth's laboratory school, the investment in our facility will further mark EKU as the preeminent destination institution for teacher preparation in Kentucky and beyond," Williamson said.

Model has made its home in the Donovan Building on EKU's campus since the building was dedicated over six decades ago. In 2009, it was designated by EKU is a revitalization priority.
