Farristown Middle School cheerleaders won the Team Spirit Middle School State Cheer and Dance Classic competition Sunday at Dunbar High School.
This year was a tough one for the 16 cheerleaders on the team, said their coach Tami Howard, but winning at district level, and then receiving the highest score of the Team Spirit state championship showed them that hard work and perseverance pays.
“We have had girls injured, and others had to leave the team, so we had to find replacements,” Howard said. “It’s just been one thing after another. We even had to drop out of a couple of competitions we had planned because we just weren’t ready.”
However, when the time came to prepare for the state competition, Howard told her team that they would compete no matter what.
“They worked on that routine all year, so they were determined to make it work,” she said.
When the cheerleaders heard they won first place in their division, “they were ecstatic,” Howard said. Afterward, when they found out they were the competition’s grand champion, she had never seen her team so excited, she said.
“They just screamed. To end a rough year with a big win like that, it was just wonderful for all of us,” Howard said.
