After months of work, the latest edition of the City of Berea Strategic Plan will be unveiled Monday at a special called meeting of the Berea City Council. The event will take place at the Russel Acton Folk Center, 212 Jefferson Street, beginning at 6 p.m.

Facilitators from the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC) will be on hand to present the framework of the plan, which was drafted after gathering input from elected officials, city department heads, citizens and community groups.

Monday’s meeting follows a session last March in which citizens were invited to share their opinions about the city’s advantages, challenges and future priorities. Since then, officials have continued seeking community input with the goal of forging a consensus that can serve as a guide for Berea’s long-term future plan.

“We’re really fortunate in Berea to have the quality of life amenities that people enjoy and expect in their hometown,” said Mayor Bruce Fraley. “That’s why I wanted us to go through with this strategic planning process. The Berea City Council is very interested in providing services our citizens want, and we want to utilize their tax dollars accordingly.”

KLC Community Development Director Tad Long said Monday’s meeting is the next important step in the strategic plan process, since it gives citizens a glimpse of how the plan is coming together as well as another chance to have their say.

“This second meeting gives everyone an opportunity to see the direction that the plan is taking,” Long said. “We know citizens of Berea are very interested and concerned about the future of the city, so we ask them to show up and tell us if we’ve got it right, or if we’re missing something. Berea is fortunate to have a lot of good work already in place.”

With the assistance of KLC facilitators, the Berea City Council began the strategic plan process in February. After completing the framework of the City of Berea Strategic Plan, which is intended to cover the next three to five years, presentation of the final draft to the council is anticipated before the end of this year.

In the meantime, Mayor Fraley encourages citizens to participate in Monday’s meeting.

“We’ve got a lot going on here, and this plan is one of the most exciting things the City of Berea has taken on,” Fraley said. “Everybody is invited to see this final draft — we really want people to come out and give us their feedback. There’s still time to share ideas. We want to get this right.”
