The Berea Police Department (BPD) had some big announcements to make when they stated they would be adding new Tesla cruisers and body cameras for their staff on Monday.
BPD held an equipment reveal to show the public just what new things the BPD were adding to their arsenal to keep their citizens safe Monday afternoon at the Berea Police Department located on Chestnut Street.
BPD’s Chief, Eric Scott, told The Register the unveiling of the new 2021 model three Long Range Tesla cars for the department had been a long time coming.
At the time of the announcement, the three new Teslas were on scene and ready to start patrolling the streets of Berea. Scott explained because the cars will not require maintenance or fuel costs, the BPD estimates they will save $5,688 per vehicle.
The Teslas were not the only unveiling the BPD had in store, though. They also announced the BPD would be using a new body camera system. Chief Scott explained the system is known as BodyWorn by a company called Utility.
“These are the most sophisticated, high-end cameras out there,” Scott said. He believes these are the only body cameras backed by both the NAACP and the NRA.
The story will be updated as it develops.
