Since 2012, the Richmond Lions Club has sponsored the American Flag Program during patriotic holidays and, despite a pandemic, members said they will continue that tradition this Memorial Day.
"We now have 100 flags and 30 of them go in the courthouse square," said Ordelle Hill, Richmond Lions Club Flag Program Chairman.
Club members hope to grow that number this year and are reaching out to businesses and individuals who would like to have a flag mounted in front of their stores or on the courthouse square on Monday.
"Most of them have been sponsored by individuals. A lot of people sponsor flags which are in memory, or in honor of, military members who have passed on or are currently serving," Hill explained. "We have several flags that are in memory of World War II veterans."
The club puts flags out every year for six patriotic holidays, with Memorial Day kicking off the year.
Hill said the Lions Club created the American Flag Program for two reasons.
"It permits us to observe patriotic holidays and another reason is that several of those in our club are veterans," he explained.
