We have a new citizen in Union City. Presley Reese Colligan was born Monday, August 5. She is the daughter of Michael and Becky Colligan and granddaughter of Gary and Shelia Murphy. and great-granddaughter of Robert and Irene Abney. Congratulations!
This is not intended to criticize anyone, but especially at this time of the year, there is something that state, county and city officials seem to miss. On roads around the county, several signs have weeds or tree branches grown in front of them making them partially or totally invisible. It is not just a local problem, because last week, I saw a street sign in Lexington covered by a tree branch.
Since many signs are in place for safety reasons, we would expect that city policemen, county deputies and state troopers would notice and report them to the appropriate office. One example of a covered sign is on Four Mile Road in a sharp curve. Coming from Richmond, the large arrow is completely invisible until a driver is right beside it. The irony of this is that many police officers drive the road every day for shooting range practice at the end of the road. People who drive the road each day and know the road may not even notice, but new people driving the road could be in danger because of a hidden sign.
What is the solution? Perhaps all police officers should be given a form, if they do not already have it, to report any road safety issue to the road department. Maybe magistrates or city council members could assign people to check in each area of the county for any problems. This is just my opinion but hope someone notices.
