Campers finished up the week with brains full of cooking knowledge and bellies full of homemade food after participating in Kid’s KrEATions, part of a series of St. Mark Catholic School “Live, Grow, Learn” summer camps.
Counselor Shapell Guest said she enjoyed this camp the most because it was so “hands on.”
Campers learned cooking safety, ingredient measurements, cooking times, knife safety and a bunch of “valuable life skills,” she said. “Kids usually don’t get to do some of this stuff at home.”
On Thursday, campers created their own batter for cheese sticks, cupcakes and homemade marshmallow and buttercream icing, ice cream cone cupcakes, and kid-friendly fruit roll-ups.
A homemade version of “muddy buddies” or “puppy chow” was created with a mixture of melted sunflower butter and dark chocolate over top of Chex cereal and coated in powdered sugar.
Campers “oohhed” and “awwed” as Dominick Saponaro, 7, poured an entire bag of powdered sugar into a mixing bowl to create marshmallow and buttercream icing.
As a rule, campers were required to try at least one bite of every recipe created. And although they brought packed lunches every day, “kids didn’t want to eat their lunch because we feed them so much,” Guest joked.
Campers were assisted by counselor Bryn Gannon, volunteer counselor Ally Gannon and retired chef Sean Christianson.
