A few good ideas for our city

How about a hotel and conference center in Richmond? What an interesting question? I learned the other day that this idea is being tossed around again and given the changes in the community, maybe its time has come.

Observations from the candidate forum

It was apparent to me the most important thing to come out of the candidate forum was the nature of the questions submitted by the citizens because they are concerned about where the city is going and who is providing the leadership. They are concerned about transparency of commission’s conduct, smart growth and consolidated 911.

How to pick a Kentucky Derby winner

As the son of a son of a gambler, people ask me for betting advice.Although I started going to race track before I was able to walk, I don’t know that much about the horse industry. I go the track a few times a year and bet small amounts. Most of my equine knowledge was gleaned when I worked on the clean-up crew at the Kentucky Horse Park. I can tell you what horses make the biggest messes.

The Masters: An experience like no other

The Masters is a tradition like no other, I’ve heard that many times over the years. After attending the opening round; it’s much more. It’s an experience like no other; a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Online forums and polls identify hot topics of community interest

People in increasing numbers are getting their news through the Internet. Because this is a growing trend, community forums and online polls are becoming a very popular way of free expression. A community forum allows users to comment about news of the day as well as discuss anything on their minds with other users anonymously, while online polls allow users to express their opinions about different questions of the day.

David M. Jones: Seeking truth and closure

Printing facts is paramount. As long as the facts are never presented, rumors and speculation will continue to run rampant until the facts are known. Until that happens, closure won’t occur.

Culpa aceitosa

When we hear about the outrageous prices of the barrels of going up, breaking previous ceilings, we start wondering about what else is going on in the world.

Will the city commission learn from the Camp Catalpa fiasco?

On Feb. 26, Richmond City Commission unanimously approved an order leasing 15 acres at Camp Catalpa to a private group for an RV park. Two days later, Mayor Connie Lawson executed the lease. Now, they have unanimously decided it was a poor decision and reneged on another commitment they’ve made. The rescinding of this lease also might have possible legal ramifications if Lakeview RV Park LLC chooses to pursue them, which could cost the city public money.

Richmond City Commission getting what they deserve

It’s amazing what happens when public forums aren’t conducted and local governments aren’t as open as they say they are. The fire storm caused by the possibility of an RV park at Camp Catalpa is a prime example of what happens. The Richmond City Commission is getting every bit of what they deserve by not conducting public forums about this issue.

RV park causing a big stink

There is a real foul stench floating across Lake Reba from Camp Catalpa back to Richmond City Hall. It’s not caused by raw sewage or trash or dead animals, but rather due to the manner in which Order 08-36 was quickly and quietly passed by the city commission.

What’s confusing about saving lives?

Time is running out for the Richmond City Commission regarding consolidation of 911 dispatch services. The city commission up to now has been lethargic in addressing this issue. But credit Mayor Connie Lawson for reviving it and allowing them another chance; however, this may be their last one and can no longer dilly-dally around with this issue.

Immigration threat myth survival kit

Most of us descend from immigrants who arrived to this land 150 years ago in search of new opportunities. We should not forget that old remedies prevail throughout time; just like that honey-bourbon remedy that has been passed on generation after generation. Immigration is still a good remedy for a weak economy.

Eleven candidates is a win-win for Richmond

Competition is good and healthy. It makes you better and it creates opportunities. Opportunities create change. That’s why it’s a win-win for the citizens of Richmond when 11 citizens file to seek four seats on the Richmond City Commission.
