The Republican governor of South Carolina probably should have a talk with former Kentucky Democrat governor Paul Patton.Paul might be able to offer some tips on dealing with the extramarital affair recently disclosed after South Carolina’s chief executive vanished for over five days.

Making a bad bill worse

How do you make a dreadfully bad piece of legislation -- the nearly $900-billion so-called “stimulus” bill -- worse? Simple -- add protectionism.

The national Ponzi scheme

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was set up to combat fraudulent practices. The SEC's website explains that "Ponzi schemes are a type of illegal pyramid scheme named for Charles Ponzi, who duped thousands of New England residents into investing in a postage stamp speculation scheme back in the 1920s.

Family planning is essential

The right-wing attack machine went into overdrive last week after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi dared to defend funds for family planning in the House’s stimulus bill.

It is time to select permanent judges

It’s been like the judicial hall of fame in Madison Family Court and Madison District Court lately. We have had some of the best former district and circuit judges in Kentucky presiding over those two courts. It’s not entirely a good thing. They are not judges we elected, and they are not permanent. As the situation persists, there are negative consequences.

Sometimes you hear the same rumor for a long time, but it is never realized, and you eventually give up hope. You know the rumors. Led Zeppelin will reunite and tour. The new Harry Potter film will be released soon. Richmond is getting a skatepark.

Sunday winery sales is a tourism initiative and nothing more

Tourism is important to Madison County’s economy and Acres of Land Winery is just one of the many tools available to entice tourists to come and spend a day or two with us. And when they come, they spend money important to economic vitality.

Incumbents delivered a wake-up call

Incumbent Richmond City Commissioner Mike Brewer is breathing a sigh of relief today. He knows he is very fortunate to survive Tuesday’s election. Even though Commissioners Robert Blythe and Bill Strong haven’t openly admitted that same sentiment, they are very fortunate likewise. That’s what happens when citizens are given quality candidates to choose from that provide the opportunity for change.

Machiavelli and the economic crisis

I wish one of our economic leaders had been a political science major. George Bush has an MBA from Harvard. Henry Paulson has an MBA from Harvard. Ben Bernanke graduated from Harvard before he became a Princeton professor. The crisis is not boding well for the Ivy League.

Kentucky Senator (and Republican Minority Leader) Mitch McConnell is in a tight race for re-election with challenger Bruce Lunsford. If you look at history, that is not surprising.

Teens and drinking a bad combo

I am writing to express my concern for teens who are heading back to school this fall that may be exposed to the dangers of alcohol and underage drinking. As a Kentucky State Trooper, I see first-hand the destruction that underage drinking has on our youth. One of the most difficult tasks for any law enforcement officer is to notify a parent that their teen has been fatally injured because of an alcohol-related circumstance.

Tabling ordinance a wise decision

More often than not, I’ve been very critical of many of the decisions the Richmond City Commission has made over the past several years. But, I must give credit where credit is due. The recent action by the city commission to table an ordinance amending the city’s original noise ordinance was a wise move on their part.

A few good ideas for our city

How about a hotel and conference center in Richmond? What an interesting question? I learned the other day that this idea is being tossed around again and given the changes in the community, maybe its time has come.
