John Arthur Utley, 81

BEREA — John Arthur “Poppy” Utley, age 81, formerly of Orchard Street in Berea, Ky., passed away Sunday, November 17, 2013, at Baptist Health in Richmond.

John was a retired chef from Eastern Kentucky University. He had a great love of music and was a bass guitar player for Narrow Road for over 18 years. He also enjoyed taking part in Berea’s Picking on the Porch. John served the Lord as a member and trustee of WestSide Baptist Church for many years and was also honored to be distinguished as a Kentucky Colonel.  

John was preceded in death by: his parents, several siblings and his wives, Linda Mae Rogers Utley and Lois Stanley Utley.

He is survived by: his children, Vickie Utley of Richmond, John Randall (Cheryl) Utley of Wilmington, Ohio, Carrie (Roy) Grimes of Athens, Tenn., Joe (Anita) Stanley of Berea and Joan (Harley) Wise of Shepherdsville, Ky. He also is survived by 10 grandchildren, Lisa (Mike) Hisle whom he raised as his own, Chasity Utley, Constance Arredondo, Brandon Carder, Patrick Grimes, Lisa Caudill, Emily Kingery, Julie Werkmeister, Jacob Wise and Jim Wise. Eleven great-grandchildren also survive him.

Funeral services will be 11 am Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at WestSide Baptist Church with Rev. Allen Livingood officiating. Burial will follow in the Rogers Family Cemetery of Jackson County. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 5 to 9 p.m. at WestSide Baptist Church.

    Mrs. Lakes was born June 13, 1930, in Rockcastle County to James and Delia Johnson Abrams.
    She was retired from Brown & Williams Tobacco Company in Lexington. She was a faithful listener of the WLJC Gospel Broadcast and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

    He was born July 14, 1954, in Orange, New Jersey, to Frank and Marjorie McDowell Dalton, both of whom preceded him in death.

  • Gary Lee Winburn, 69

    Gary Lee Winburn, 69, of Richmond, passed away Monday, April 14, 2014, at the UK Medical Center in Lexington.
    A native of Richmond, Kentucky, he was the son of Marcus and Johnetta Arch Winburn, both of whom preceded him in death. Gary had been an employee of the former Begley Drug Company and was a retired employee of Car Quest Auto Parts Store. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Richmond.
