Irene Elswick Matthews, 93,

RICHMOND — Irene Elswick Matthews, 93, of Richmond, passed away Monday, November 18, 2013, at the Hospice Compassionate Care Center of Richmond.

She was born December 30, 1919, in Madison County, to Willie and Bessie Moberly Elswick, both of whom preceded her in death.

She was a retired clerk having worked for several years at Lerman Brothers Department Store and Stockton’s Drug Store. She was a member of Anchor Baptist Church, and she enjoyed her church and church family very much. She was a wonderful cook who loved and led her family as a very kind and loving mother and friend.

She was the widow of Carl Matthews and is survived by: two daughters, Patsy Spivey (and Aubrey) of Richmond and Linda Gustafson (and Edwin) of Danville, Ky.; one son, Terry Lee Matthews (and Wanda) of Garrard County; six grandchildren, Chad Spivey, Kim Chitwood, Brittany Smyth, Brooks Jackson, Danny Coffey and Danica Kidd. She also leaves 13 great-grandchildren, Brandon Chitwood, Justin Chitwood, Jared Chitwood, Alexandra Smyth, Ashton Smyth, Harrison Smyth, Parker Jackson, Logan Jackson, Colin Jackson, Tanner Jackson, Eligah Coffey, Aiden Coffey and Heidi Kidd.

Funeral service for Mrs. Matthews will be conducted 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, November 20, 2013, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home. Pastor Paul Sowders will officiate. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Oldham, Roberts & Powell.

Pallbearers will be Chad Spivey, Todd Chitwood, Brandon Chitwood, Danny Coffey, Tony Kidd and Glenn Cox. Honorary pallbearers will be Terry Matthews, Edwin Gustafson, David Evans, Bill Tillett, Aubrey Spivey, Lily Banks, Becky Gooch and Diane Mullikin.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to the Hospice Compassionate Care Center, 350 Isaacs Lane, Richmond, KY 40475 or Anchor Baptist Church, PO Box 1794, Richmond, KY 40476
