Stafford P. Nelson, 90

RICHMOND — Stafford P. Nelson, 90, of Richmond, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2014, at Telford Terrace in Richmond.

He was born January 21, 1924, in Richmond, Kentucky, to the late Stafford Gibson and Lena Smith Nelson.

Stafford was a retired service supervisor for Kentucky Utilities, which he served for 30 years, and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of First Baptist Church and loved to fish and golf, but most importantly, he loved his family.

Stafford was preceded in death by: his wife, Jane Gott Nelson; a son, Clay Nelson; one brother, Alonzo Nelson; one sister, Florine Nelson; and one grandson, Robert Nelson “Robby” Shepherd.

Survivors include: one daughter, Vickie Nelson Shepherd, formerly of Richmond and residing in Georgia; one granddaughter, Leigh Mackler (Jay) of Georgia; two great-grandchildren, Lyla Mackler and Parker Mackler; four nephews, Thomas Clouse IV, Barry Nelson, Andy Rucker, Alan Rucker and Terry Rice; and two nieces, Tina Cain, Ann Rucker Clark and Kimberly Clouse.

Services for Stafford will be conducted 11 a.m. Monday, July 14, 2014, at Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jeff May officiating. Burial will follow in the Richmond Cemetery where military honors will be observed.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Michael Nelson, Andy Smith, Alan Rucker, Terry Rice and Ewell Cobb.

Honorary bearers will be Buddy Roberts, Gary Sparks, Bill Jennings, Charles Hacker, Glenmore Jones, Tommy Clouse, Andy Rucker, Wilson Bond, Harriett Spivey, Bill Gray and Eugene Wiggins.

Donations are suggested to the UK Scholarship Fund. Make checks payable to: University of Kentucky and Memo for Meredith Leigh Buscher Memorial Scholarship Fund. Checks may be mailed c/o Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home, PO Box 596, Richmond, KY 40476-0596.

    She was proceeded in death by her mother, Corda Jean Jones. Survivors include: son, Sean Anthony Dykes; daughter, Destiny Faith Dykes; a special niece, Cassie Richardson; and a special nephew, Johnathan Stamper, all of Richmond.

    Ralph Gentry Elkin, 88, of Carolina Shores, N.C., died Friday, May 23, 2014, in Grand Strand Regional Medical Center of Myrtle Beach, S.C.
    Mr. Elkin was born November 25, 1925, in Berea, Ky., a son of the late T.J. and Dora Gentry Elkin. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Gayle S. Elkin; a brother, James Elkin; and sister, Elizabeth Seals.
