Edward Alton Miller, 85

Marine veteran of WWII, Korea

RICHMOND — Edward Alton Miller, 85, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at The Willows at Hamburg residential care facility in Lexington, Kentucky, after an extended illness.

Ed was born Feb. 29, 1928, to George Washington Miller and Tressie Idella Williams Miller in Sipsey, Alabama. He moved with his family to Phillips County (Helena), Arkansas, in the midst of the Great Depression and resided there for many years.

Ed was a U.S. Marine, active during WWII and the Korean War. After leaving active duty, he lived in California and worked in the Bakersfield oil fields. He returned to Helena, Arkansas, in the late 1950s to care for his parents and worked for Mohawk Rubber Company from 1958 until the company closed in 1979.

He and his wife moved to Richmond, Kentucky, in 1983 where he was an independent businessman. Both retired in 1997.

Ed is survived by: his wife, Johnnie Havens Schaffhauser Miller; stepson Ted Bryant Schaffhauser Jr. (Derrick); sister Ritta Browning (Robert); and four grandchildren, Mariah, Michael, Zachary and Laine Schaffhauser.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, George and Tressie Miller; son Edward Alton (Buddy) Miller; brothers Nesbert Miller (Bonnie) and Joe Miller (Genie); and sister Carleen Miller Ellis (Clovis).

Ed was a kind and generous man with a sharp and pointed wit. He never failed to see the humor in any situation and often relieved the tension of a stressful situation with his keen observation of the obvious.

He like to point out that he had only celebrated 21 birthdays as he was a leap year baby.

Ed will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.

There will be no service in Kentucky. A memorial service will be conducted in Helena, Arkansas, at a date to be announced.
