RICHMOND — Karl-Heinz W. Boewe, 79, of Richmond, passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013, at The Terrace Nursing & Rehabilitation Complex in Berea, Kentucky.

Karl-Heinz was born April 9, 1934, on the island of Rügen in the Baltic Sea, north of the Germany mainland. He was the son of Wilhelm Carsten Boewe and Charlotte Elisabeth Hornke Boewe, both of whom preceded him in death.

Karl-Heinz served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960. He received his Ph.D. in German studies from Rice University in Houston, Texas, and taught German at the University of Missouri for several years. Later he turned to a career in medical librarianship, most recently at the University of Kentucky. He attended the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Richmond with his wife.

Survivors include: his loving wife of over 30 years, Joan Lorna Pierce Boewe of Richmond; one daughter, Mona Isabel Boewe, and husband Charlie Miller, of West Orange, N.J.; two stepdaughters, Sonya Connors, and husband Jim of Leesburg, Va., and Janin Vann, and husband Dave, of Laguna Niguel, Calif.; one brother, Manfred Joachim Boewe, and wife Claudia, of Costa Rica; and eight grandchildren.

Memorial services will be conducted at a later date. Oldham, Roberts & Powell Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the University of Kentucky Medical Library, Lexington.
