James Madison ‛Jimmy’ Cox Jr., 85

Estill County — James Madison “Jimmy” Cox Jr., 85, a resident of the Irvine Health and Rehabilitation Center in Irvine, Ky., died Saturday, May 10, 2014, at the Clark Regional Medical Center in Winchester, Ky.

Jim was born in Ravenna, Ky., to James Madison and Pearl Barger Cox.

Two brothers, J.L. Cox of Louisville and Jewett Cox of Irvine, Ky, predeceased Mr. Cox. He was married to Juanita Winn of Irvine (they divorced in 1982). One son, Keith Madison Cox, and one grandson, Madison Alexander Cox, also predeceased Jim.

He is survived by: one son, Charles Winn Cox (Beth); and one daughter, Jamee Barton (Larry). He has six surviving grandchildren: Charlie Cox, Chad Cox, Daniel Wells, Lexie Cox, Andrew and Heath Barton.

Jim was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in the Korean War and receiving the National Defense Service Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal, the UN Service Medal and the Korean Service Ribbon (with one star).

He was a member of the Irvine Lodge No. 137, F&AM, the American Legion and the Ravenna Church of the Nazarene.

Mr. Cox retired from the Kentucky State Police as a captain and worked for many years at Eastern Kentucky University in the Bureau of Training for law enforcement officials.

A memorial service will be conducted at Oldham, Roberts and Powell Funeral Home in Richmond, Ky., 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, followed by a Masonic service at 7 p.m.
