Dr. Sheryl Jo Stephan, 78

RICHMOND — Dr. Sheryl Jo Stephan, 78, of Richmond, Ky., passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at Kenwood Health and Rehab in Richmond.

Dr. Stephan was born on August 6, 1934, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and was the daughter of Joseph Ambrose Stephan and Mildred Arnetta Stephan, both of whom preceded her in death.

She received her undergraduate degree at MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Ill., her master’s degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, Iowa, and her doctorate from Indiana University.

She taught in L’Anse, Michigan, for three years and in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, for six years, before coming to Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond. She taught there for 30 years in the Parks and Recreation Department before her retirement in 2002.

Sheryl enjoyed hiking and had a great love for the outdoors. She was director of Camp Hitaga in Iowa for several summers. She also was active in the Helping Hands Cancer Support Group of Richmond.

Survivors include: one brother, R.J. Stephan (& Pat) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and four nephews and nieces, Craig Stephan (& Sheila) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Connie Kielty (& Dave), of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, Brian Stephan (& Carrie),\ of Iowa City, Iowa, and Laurie Collins (& Mike), of Seneca, South Carolina.

The family wishes to express their gratitude to Morning Point Assisted Living, Baptist Health, Richmond Health & Rehab-Kenwood, and the Hospice Compassionate Care Center for their kindness and the care given to Sheryl during her last years. A special thank you to her doctors, nurses, caregivers, special friends and colleagues.

Funeral services will be scheduled at a later date in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Instead of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
