William Lucian Matthews, 77

RICHMOND — William Lucian Matthews Sr., was born December 21, 1935, to the late Martin and Callie Palmer/Royce Matthews.

He professed his soul to Christ at a young age and became a member of the First Baptist Church in Berea, Ky., and was always eager to work in any capacity there.

In his adult life, Lucian (as he was commonly known) joined the U.S. Navy where, while there, he had been on the Rhine River Patrol, a member of the Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) which is the precursor for what is now known as the U.S. Navy Seals, and for a short time a member of the U.S. Naval Choir. He retired from the Bluegrass Army Depot in 1988 as an ammunition inspector.

Lucian married the love of his life, Marcella Miller Matthews, who is left to carry his legacy and cherish his memory along with their four children, two daughters-in-law and seven grandchildren: Carla M. Baldwin and her son Floyd Baldwin Jr. of Richmond, William Matthews Jr., his wife Cheryl and their daughter Amy of Berea, Patti Matthews of Berea and her daughter Ashley (William Burl) Sweat of Richmond, and Timothy Matthews and his wife Soraya and their children, Tamera, LeTeah, Tyson, and Trinity; five sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law whom he regarded as sisters and brother, Elfreda Raglin and Vickie Miller of Midway, Ky., Wenola Noland of Richmond, Breen Miller and his wife Havevah of Lithonia, Ga., and Jean Miller (Delmont) of Dover, Del.; two aunts-in-law, Elizabeth Denny of Berea and Mary Denny of Cleveland, Ohio; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services for Mr. Matthews will be 1 p.m. Saturday, September 14, 2014, at First Baptist Church in Berea with Rev. J.K. Cunningham officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the hour of services. Burial will follow in the Madison Memorial Gardens.
